Choosing Among Craftsman Mowers

By Matt Hawkins

If you are considering purchasing a Craftsman lawn mower, you simply can’t choose a better brand.  Craftsman has been producing mowers for over 75 years now and has received numerous awards for their exceptional durability and performance. In fact, Craftsman won the 2010 Reader’s Choice Award in Popular Mechanics magazine as the favorite brand of lawn mower.

Start by Considering What You Need in a Mower

Craftsman sells a wide variety of lawn mowers, as well as riding mowers and lawn tractors, so you will first want to take some time to think about exactly what you need and want in a mower.

If you have a lot of acreage to mow, have to deal with bumpy or hilly terrain, or have other yard tasks in mind besides simply lawn mowing, you will probably want to consider a lawn tractor or riding mower, as these are made for handling such challenges and for handling attachments for specialized tasks such as lawn aeration and rototilling. On the other hand, if you are simply looking for a state-of-the-art lawn mower that will mow your lawn efficiently and reliably, then a standard lawn mower should do.

21” Rear Bag Push High Wheel Mower

Craftsman makes several excellent push mowers worth considering. The 21” Rear Bag Push High Wheel Mower is one such mower. It features as Briggs & Stratton Platinum Series 190cc engine and ReadyStart® starting, which facilitates starting the mower.

This mower comes with a 21 in. 3-in-1 deck that allows for bagging, mulching, and side discharging and includes an EZ Attach rear bag with a dust blocker on the back. It packs in plenty of torque for cutting even in thick grass and weeds and is a cinch to start. It also happens to be quite lightweight for a mower and is easy to push up hills and maneuver in tight spaces. It comes with a 2-year warranty.

22” Front Wheel Drive Self Propelled High Wheel Mower

A higher-end mower that incorporates all of the features of the 21” Rear Bag Push Mower but also offers some additional nice-to-have features of its own is Craftsman’s 22” Front Wheel Drive Self Propelled High Wheel Mower. Its state-of-the-art 22 in. deck design optimizes the cut while allowing excellent bagging, mulching, or discharging. It incorporates 12 in. high rear wheels for added maneuverability and provides the same amount of torque as the aforementioned 21” Rear Bag Push Mower.

One great feature of this 22” mower is that its front wheel drive has a variable speed that can be adjusted to your pace. This makes the mowing experience more comfortable. Another great feature is Craftsman’s exclusive rear door interlock. This feature allows one-handed operation while the operator is removing the bag. The rear door stays open when reattaching the bag and closes automatically when mowing resumes. Although it has somewhat of a higher price tag than the 21” push mower, this 22” mower adds a new level of efficiency and comfort to mowing that should not be taken lightly.

21” High Wheel Rear Bag Push Mower

For those looking for a more economical mower that still provides great durability and excellent cutting performance, it is worth considering the 21” High Wheel Rear Bag Push Mower, which retails at a slightly cheaper price than the other 21” push mower discussed in this article. This particular mower also incorporates a Briggs & Stratton 190cc engine, but with 6.75 lbs. of torque compared to 7 lbs. in the other mower. It includes the same 3-in-1 deck for bagging, mulching, and side discharge and the ReadyStart® feature as well. If you are looking for a basic Craftsman push mower that is lightweight, fairly quiet, and gets the job done day in and day out, look no further than this mower.
The aim of this article has been to introduce you to a few of the more popular Craftsman mowers. While you really can’t go wrong with the Craftsman brand, you will want to do a little research into the various lawn mower models to determine which one is right for you. Craftsman mowers can be purchased at Sears, Kmart, and many hardware stores. Their parts can also be purchased online at
